Contact the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) on their general enquiries phone number 03459 33 55 77 for farming guidelines and to register an animal on the pet travel scheme.
Defra is the UK government department which is responsible for conserving the natural environment through close liaison with rural farmers and scientific bodies. They also manage UK food regulations and provide guidelines on the international transportation of livestock. You can phone their general enquiries phone number 03459 33 55 77 to check what items of food you are allowed to bring into the country following an overseas holiday and to report flooding in your local area. Similarly you should call this helpline to file a formal complaint against local plans for building on floodplains which may endanger your property.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is available to be contacted from 8:30am-5:00pm Monday-Friday so please do not attempt to phone them on weekends. Calls to their national telephone helpline are charged at identical rates as phoning local numbers starting with 01 and 02 area codes. This means that if you have inclusive minutes on your landline or mobile tariff you can contact Defra for free.
Rural services helpline – 0300 020 0301
Farmers can contact Defra on their rural services helpline 0300 020 0301 to apply for a grant over the phone, for guidance on importing livestock species into the UK and for international food regulations. You should also call this helpline immediately to report suspicious deaths to your flock as these may be caused by virulent diseases such as food and mouth. Furthermore if you would like to register a portion of your land to be used in livestock farming or to revert it to either a follow field or crop growth then call this helpline to update your file.
Pet travel scheme – 0370 241 1710
Contact the pet travel scheme run by Defra by calling their UK phone number 0370 241 1710 to enquire about the quarantine restrictions that apply to an animal scheme, to register an animal for international travel and to report lost documents such as a pet passport. There are additional regulations which apply to pets travelling more than five days after their owner and for animals which originated from outside the UK so please call Defra for confirmation of these directives.
